Maybe I'm just too curious, but when I saw a Google advertisement for a diabetes weight loss book, I clicked on the ad to see what was being advertised.

I found a very interesting one-page website (http://www.diabeticdietsecrets.com), proudly proclaiming an "ebook" that you can download (for a price!). The website states that the book was written by a doctor and a nurse (both of whose names are given), "with help from a nutritionist" (but the nutritionist didn't get his/her name listed).

I looked the doctor's name up in the ADA and AACE directories, and couldn't locate him as a member of either organization. So, I have no idea if the doctor has expertise in diabetes. There's no "About Us" or "Contact Us" or other information about who he is, and what his qualifications might be, or those of the nurse, or those of the poor unnamed nutritionist! And no e-mail address to write to for further information.

I'm not at all sure I want to trust this book if the authors won't tell us something about themselves, or if the editing on their website is an indication of the quality of the book:

  • The headline on the webpage has an opening quotation mark, but no close-quote punctuation.
  • Missing "s" as part of the word "books" in: "We found out there are a ton of book on diabetes"
  • Extra space between "health" and the comma: "Health ,"
  • Missing comma after the slang word "Yeah"
  • Inconsistent use of bolding some statements and not bolding others in a bulleted list. (As I've done in this bullet point.)
  • Inappropriate capitalization in the middle of sentences.

The authors want the reader to pay them $19.95. They claim to have a money-back guarantee — and since you would have to order by credit card, you definitely do have a chance to get your money back, depending upon your credit card company's policy about refunds when ordering merchandise on the Internet.

I ended up wondering, who's to say that there really is a diabetes doctor and nurse and nutritionist behind this? Maybe it's a diabetic teenager who's got time on his hands and larceny in his heart.

P.S. If the authors of this book happen to find this commentary: please contact me, tell me more about yourselves, and arrange to forward me a copy of the book for review, and I'll happily publish a review at our book reviews section.
