Helpful if you love technology.

Pros:

• Alerts anyone anywhere, at a time you choose, with a message you choose, by leaving a text message on their cell phone.
• Can send recurring messages.
• Can send messages to anybody's cell phone.
• Can set a message to be sent days in advance of when you want it sent.
• Can use any name as the sender of the message.
• Can send an e-mail to yourself to let you know the text message was sent.
• First month free.

• Need a cell phone (and need to have it on!)
• Messages may be delayed in arrival (depending on your cell phone company's promptness in sending text messages).
• Costs a few dollars per month.
• Can only set messages to be sent on the quarter-hour.
• Leaves a brief (and unnecessary) indicator in the text message that the message came via MemoText.

MemoText has been around for a while, and the company recently realized that their product can be useful for people with diabetes. Basically, it's a computer-based reminder system, where you enter the message, and when you wish it sent, and to whom, into their computers via a web-based interface. Then their computers send the message when you requested it to that cell phone number.

The web interface is easy to use (see screenshots at the right). The only problem I had was entering recurring dates: be very careful to check all the boxes required. (The first time I tried, I didn't set the "end date" and the default entry remained as today's date.)

The messages seemed to frequently arrive a few minutes after they should, but I've had this problem with other messages at my phone carrier (Verizon).

Is it useful for people with diabetes? The company suggests using it for:

Summary: A clever merger of technologies.
