Question

I have type 1 diabetes and have started drinking hot milk drinks at night. However, I had to stop after just two nights because my blood sugar goes through the roof. Can you tell me why? I am using whole milk. If this is the cause, can you suggest an alternative milk for me to drink?

Answer

Your blood glucose levels are elevated because milk is a significant source of carbohydrate! Remember that carbohydrate has the most impact on blood glucose levels. Also, milk is a liquid, so the glucose from milk will enter the circulation even faster, thus spiking levels. If you did not know this about milk (and other dairy products), then you need to see a Registered Dietitian/Certified Diabetes Educator (RD/CDE) who can counsel you on what foods raise your sugar and how much you can have at each meal to prevent excessive fluctuations.
