Question

I am 69 years old, have had type 1 diabetes for 38 years, and I am considering getting a tattoo on my lower leg. My circulation is good in my legs and feet although I have neuropathy. Is this likely to be a problem?

Answer

You should be able to get a tattoo without a problem if:
  1. Your diabetes is under excellent control.
  2. You have the tattooing done under sterile conditions. (By the way, alcohol swabbing of the skin would not be sufficient — one of those ugly-smelling, yellow-orange liquids like Betadine) should be used.)
  3. Your doctor agrees that the neuropathy will not impair wound-healing.
