Question

I have type 2 diabetes. How many sugars are in an apple?

Answer

In the past, when someone was diagnosed with diabetes, they were told they should not eat sugar. The thinking was that sugar affected blood sugar more than complex carbohydrates (table sugar compared to a slice of bread). However, that thinking has shifted.

All carbohydrates are considered fairly equal as far as affecting blood sugar. The currently thinking is to count carbohydrate not sugar. The American Diabetes Association Exchange List states that 1 small unpeeled apple contains 15 grams carbohydrate and 60 calories.
