I Don't Understand Why My Sugar Transiently Goes Up After Breakfast.

Question

I am 69 years of age, have type 2 diabetes, and the doctor has me on one tablet of metformin in the morning. My fasting blood sugar runs around 118-122 mg/dL [6.6-6.8 mmol/L]. Then I eat a small bowl of oatmeal and one-half of a banana. About an hour and half later, my blood sugar is as high as 165 mg/dL [9.2 mmol/L]. Then I wait another hour, and it's back down to 110-118 mg/dL [6.1- 6.6 mmol/L]. I don't understand why this is.

Answer

You are eating primarily carbohydrate (oatmeal and fruit) and carbohydrate has the most intense effect on raising blood glucose after it is eaten.
