Question

I need help because my doctor won't see me for about a month. I take 30 units of Lantus with a pen, and my evening sugars are high (245-350 mg/dL [13.6-19.4 mmol/L]). Do I need more Lantus? My doctor did give me a pen with rapid acting insulin to use as needed a while back. Should I use the rapid acting insulin regularly at night?

Answer

I would not use the rapid acting insulin at night, because you might crash into severe hypoglycemia if you guess wrong on the dose. I strongly advise you to call your physician and ask for assistance.

If you tell her you're running this high, and she won't give you any advice, then you need a new physician. You might ask her for a referral or you can contact nearby diabetes program yourself (see finding a new doctor for some hints).
