Question

I am 49 years old and have been diagnosed with pre-diabetes. I am concerned because I severe pelvic/bowel adhesions which prevent me from exercise and decreases my appetite. My weight goes up and down constantly due to chronic vomiting diarrhea, and I am probably underweight most of the time. I also have some sort of issue with my heart. Tests have been done but so far, nothing has been found. I was told by an ER doctor that I have a heart murmer and possibly a blocked artery.

How often should I be retested to see if I have developed full diabetes? Do I wait to see what happens? I am covered by an HMO and am not able to attend their classes on this subject. My doctor wasn't very helpful either.

Answer

Since you have HMO insurance, education by a diabetes nurse educator (who could help answer how often to be retested for diabetes), and diabetes classes, ought to be part of your coverage. Contact the plan's patient services representative ("ombudsman") and ask. Also, tell them that your doctor isn't helpful, and ask about changing doctors.
