Question

I am a type 2 diabetic. I am taking 4 glyburide a day, 5 metformim and 1 Actose, plus Synthroid, Celebrex, Univasc, Estrotest and lovstatin. My weight was high so I went on Weight Watchers and I exercise 3 times weekly doing aquarobotics. So far, in 3 weeks, I lost 3.8 pounds but nothing for the past 2 weeks. I feel good. My numbers are better. My sugar has dropped from 182 to 138-150 and sometimes lower. Could any of these medications prevent me from losing weight more rapidly?

Answer

If you are able to lose 1/2 to 1 pounds per week you are doing very well. The glyburide and Actos can be associated with some weight gain. The Actos can cause some fluid retention accounting for the weight gain. The glyburide, by raising insulin levels, can cause some weight gain. However it is important to control the blood sugar as you are doing so I would not advise stopping medication. If your diet is controlled, as it appears you are doing, you will lose weight slowly and this gives you the best chance of keeping it off long term. The goal is not rapid weight loss, rather sustained weight loss. Keep up the good work — it looks like you are on the right track.
