Question

Does Levemir insulin make you lose weight? I was at the hospital today and have been given some to take at night.

Answer

In Insulin Detemir: Significant Advance or Me Too?, the author states that "Some studies reported no weight gain among participants in clinical trials of insulin detemir. That is not just unusual. It is unheard of for people on insulin."

Levemir® (insulin detemir) is on the market in some countries, but not yet in the USA (as of autumn, 2004). Its label for the UK is available on-line at the eMC, where it states: "In long-term treatment trials, fasting plasma glucose in patients with type 1 diabetes was improved with Levemir compared with NPH insulin when given as basal/bolus therapy. Glycaemic control (HbA1c) with Levemir is comparable to NPH insulin, with a lower risk of nocturnal hypoglycaemia and no associated weight gain." So, no weight gain, but losing seems unlikely unless you really go on a strict meal plan — and stay on it!
