Question
I am considering taking grapefruit on a daily basis. If I recall there was some listing that taking Glucophage [brand name for metformin] and taking grapefruit was a no-no when I started with Glucophage. Your comments?Answer
You may have Glucophage (metformin) confused with other drugs that may be taken for complications of type 2 diabetes. There are no listed grapefruit restrictions with metformin. However, many people with type 2 diabetes may take Lipitor, a statin, for management of lipid levels. or may be taking other similar drugs to manage lipid levels. With Lipitor, grapefruit and grapefruit juice are prohibited.Editor's note: See Grapefruit juice increases serum concentrations of atorvastatin and has no effect on pravastatin and Lipitor at Drugs.com.
