I am a 20-year-old female who is at a healthy weight, but sedentary. I do not have diabetes, but there is some family history of both type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes.In recent months, I have been experiencing persistent thirst and frequent night sweats. I am not obese, but over the past six to seven years, I have practiced terrible eating habits. I eat large quantities of junk food/sweets (sugary, processed candy, pastries, etc.), although my meals usually consist of wholesome foods. Can a high sugar diet (without obesity) bring on type 2 diabetes, especially at this young age?

A high-sugar diet does not cause type 2 diabetes. However, obesity and lack of exercise are contributing factors to its onset, which is characterized by insulin resistance. At your age, I would be more concerned that you are at risk for type 1 diabetes with the symptoms you are describing. However, these symptoms might be indicative of any number of other maladies as well. I suggest you see a physician and get them checked out.
Eating too much sugar does not cause diabetes.
The American Diabetes Association website states: "Diabetes is caused by a combination of genetic and lifestyle factors. However, being overweight does increase your risk for developing type 2 diabetes. If you have a history of diabetes in your family, eating a healthy meal plan and regular exercise are recommended to manage your weight."
