Question
Is there a filler or inactive ingredient in Glucophage? The active ingredient is metformin. Answer
Glucophage, like most pills, contains both the active ingredient (metformin hydrochloride, as you pointed out), and inactive ingredients. According to the Glucophage label (available as a PDF file), "Each tablet contains the inactive ingredients povidone and magnesium stearate. In addition, the coating for the 500 mg and 850 mg tablets contains hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (hypromellose) and the coating for the 1000 mg tablet contains hydroxypropyl methylcellulose and polyethylene glycol." Glucophage XR "500 mg tablets contain the inactive ingredients sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, microcrystalline cellulose, and magnesium stearate. GLUCOPHAGE XR 750 mg tablets contain the inactive ingredients sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, and magnesium stearate." wwq
