Question
I'm planning on receiving eggs from a family in which the paternal grandmother developed diabetes at the age of 17. However, the mother and father are clean of the disease. What is the risk this may have for me and/or my child?Answer
The family history of the egg donor should not affect your risk of developing diabetes. The risk to your child cannot really be calculated since the family history is distant. What is not known is how the grandmother developed diabetes. Did she have a genetic predisposition or did she acquire diabetes due to pancreatic damage such as a viral infection? If the rest of the family history is unremarkable then I would suppose that your child would not be at any greater risk. Understand, that diabetes can result from many factors which are not predictable.
