I have had a sudden onset of double vision. It's lasted for two and a half weeks so far and isn't getting any better. I went to the optometrist a few days ago who said I have weakened eye muscles which are most likely from diabetes. However, I had a blood test about one month ago, and my fasting blood was 70 or so. My regular doctor won't order more diabetes tests until I get a second opinion from an ophthalmologist. Is it really necessary to see an ophthalmologist? I don't want to waste anyone's time.

Answer

Double vision due to "weakened eye muscles" is frequently due to a problem with the cranial nerves, and may be due to a lot of problems (some of which are very serious), including diabetes. I'd agree that you ought to be evaluated by an ophthalmologist.
