Question

My husband was recently placed on metformin by his doctor, and I want to do all I can to help. Do you have, or do you know of, a source for recipes and dietary do's and don'ts for persons taking metformin? I would appreciate any information I can obtain.

Answer

Dietary information for diabetes is not prescribed according to the medication you are placed on, but on your lifestyle and goals for weight, blood glucose control, blood pressure and lipid levels. To prescribe an individualized approach to your husband's specific medical and dietary needs, you must set up an appointment with a Registered Dietitian, preferably one who is also a Certified Diabetes Educator. There are several ways you could approach this:
  1. Ask your husband's doctor for a referral to a dietitian he/she recommends or works with.
  2. Contact a local diabetes education center or program to set up an appointment with an RD/CDE.
  3. Go to the American Association of Diabetes Educators website to locate a local dietitian/educator who specializes in diabetes. Use these steps: once in the website, click on "General Public"; then click on "Find an Educator"; fill in your city and state and click on "Search"; an entire list of diabetes educators with their credentials will come up and you can click on a name of an RD/CDE to obtain their address and phone number.
