Question

Over the past 10 days we have checked my husband's blood sugar. It has ranged from 139 to 217. Does this mean he probably has type 2 diabetes? We have a doctor's appointment but it is not for another 2 weeks and I'm concerned about him and what I should be doing.

Answer

Assuming the meter is correct, diabetes seems likely. See How are diabetes and pre-diabetes diagnosed?

Until the office visit, there are two things to do:

  1. Ask your husband's doctor's office staff if they can get fasting blood sugar and HbA1c testing done now, so the results are available at the time of the office visit.
  2. If he develops vomiting or is unable to eat for whatever reason, it's a medical emergency and he should be evaluated and treated immediately at an emergency room or hospital.
