Question

I take a spinning class two mornings a week, and I am concerned about my blood sugar dropping due to Byetta. What will happen?

Answer

Byetta pushes the beta cell to release insulin in a glucose-dependent manner. What this means is that Byetta only works when blood glucose is elevated. If your blood glucose level drops during exercise, even if you have injected Byetta, hypoglycemia should not develop.

In clinical trials, subjects on sulfonylureas along with Byetta did need to drop the doses of those drugs when they were given Byetta. If this is true in your case, and you are fearful of hypoglycemia during exercise, speak with your physician about reducing the dose of sulfonylureas.
