  • December 21, 2005    New research shows that eating dark chocolate reduces the risk of damaging changes in the body that can lead to diabetes. But it works only if you eat plain, dark chocolate high in disease-fighting chemicals called flavanols. Milk or white chocolate is unlikely to have the same effect. Short-term administration of dark chocolate is followed by a significant increase in insulin sensitivity and a decrease in blood pressure in healthy persons. Am. J.   • December 7, 2005    There are other things that former Pakistan cricket captain Wasim Akram can do with much �lan apart from bowling deadly in-swingers. Speaking in Chennai recently, Akram had a word or two to tell diabetics around the world.   • December 6, 2005    More and more of the Swiss population are overweight or even obese simply because they eat too much or badly, according to a national nutrition report. Type 2 diabetes in particular is on the rise. Already 250,000 people suffer from the disease and that number is increasing by ten per cent every year.   • December 1, 2005    A research group has discovered that brain levels of insulin and its related cellular receptors fall precipitously during the early stages of Alzheimer's. Insulin levels continue to drop progressively as the disease becomes more severe — adding to evidence that Alzheimer's might be a new form of diabetes.
