Patients who had surgery to reduce the size of their stomachs were five times more likely to see their diabetes disappear over the next two years than were patients who had standard diabetes care, according to Australian researchers.

Americans with diabetes are doing a better job of keeping their blood glucose under control, a new analysis shows.
The percentage of people with type 1 or
type 2 diabetes who had poor glycemic control fell from 21% in 1999 to 12.4% in 2004.

To help young people diagnosed with diabetes and their parents, NDEP is introducing a new series of teen tip sheets designed for youth ages 11 to 17 to help them manage their disease and reduce their risk for complications. This series provides useful information about diabetes and encourages teens to take action to manage their disease for a long and healthy life.
Written in clear and simple language, the tip sheets are helpful for anyone who has diabetes and his or her loved ones. Topics include:
What is Diabetes?,
Be Active!,
Stay at a Healthy Weight,
Make Healthy Food Choices,
and
Dealing with the Ups and Downs of Diabetes.
An additional tip sheet has also been developed to help teens lower their risk for type 2 diabetes.
Lower Your Risk for Type 2 Diabetes provides advice about how to reach a healthy weight and lead an active lifestyle.
