Review of Lara Takes Charge by ss 5Aug2004

The delightful story of a child who happens to have diabetes.

Rating:

Pros: This book is easily read (even by my 5 year old granddaughter with help), and should be an asset to children with diabetes and their friends! In addition, it should help adults who read it to be more proactive in their diabetes care.

Cons: Lara wears a pump (not all that common in this age group).

Comments: This book is the delightful story of a child who happens to have type 1 diabetes. Its message is a clear one — "you can still be a regular kid even though you have to do things to take care of yourself." This approximately 5 year-old young lady appears to be pretty self-sufficient and gets lots of help from the adults around her. The medical information is easy to comprehend and accurate, with perhaps the exception of the fact that Lara wears a pump (not all that common in this age group).

Recommended? Highly recommended.
