Question

Please can someone tell me if my mother who is currently using Insuman Rapid (100 IU) insulin via syringe, can switch to an insulin pen. Having read up on some literature I found that you cannot use the pen with this type of insulin.

Answer

Insuman Rapid is a brand name for a rapid-acting human insulin made by Aventis, and sold in Europe and other countries (but not in the United States).

Aventis does make insulin pens called OptiSet and OptiPen. Contrary to what you read, Insuman is available for pens — see Insulin available in the UK, and others (for example, you can search Google using "OptiSet Optipen Aventis Insuman" for many countries where Insuman is available in pens).

Your mom could switch to a pen device for her insulin, if her physician will write the prescription for her. She should discuss the possibility of making this switch with her physician, or diabetes nurse educator, or pharmacist.
