Question

I am 76 years old and have been taking insulin for 37 years. I have COPD and have had three heart attacks. I had five vascular by-passes on my right leg before my amputation almost six years ago, am now in a wheelchair, and I am very anxious to be able to do exercises. Any information would be much appreciated.

Answer

You must get in contact with an exercise physiologist who (preferably) is a Certified Diabetes Educator and has experience with cardiovascular management. Despite the thorough description you have provided of your medical condition, the multiple problems you describe should be addressed by a health care professional one-on-one with you, not through e-mail. You can talk to your physician about a referral to a cardiac rehabilitation program at a local hospital as a start.
