Question

I understand that people with diabetes don't utilize all the vitamins as properly as others and require more of some of the vitamins to get the same effect. Is there any damage to the body by taking whey protein supplements for extended periods of time? Are they easier on your kidneys as well?

Answer

For a complete summary of the American Diabetes Association's position on vitamins and minerals in diabetes, see the Position Statement entitled Nutrition Principles and Recommendations in Diabetes.

The Whey Protein Institute has a website that includes frequently asked questions about whey protein supplements and scientific references. There were no specific references on diabetes and whey protein supplements included on this list. However, the site recommends whey supplements for weight management, glucose control, and lipid control, all of which are problems in type 2 diabetes.

I believe the issue at hand is the amount of protein versus type of protein with regard to your question about diabetes and effects on kidneys. If whey protein supplements are to be used, then they need to replace some other protein source in the diet.
