Question
My five year old little sister has diabetes, and my mom and dad are having trouble with the carb thing. We know how to read the carbs on items, but some items don't say anything. They don't have the carbs on cupcakes, bread, candy, muffins, etc. I have the "My Food Plan", but it is not specific at all. Do they have any books on every food product in the USA? Please help us.
Answer
The American Diabetes Association
sells lots of books with carbohydrate content of foods. Check their website, especially
Nutrition & Recipes.
Also, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) offers an
interactive tool
for determining the nutrient content of different portions of foods from the
Food Guide Pyramid.

All foods these these days are required to have food labels describing the nutrients in the particular item. You and your parents can see
The Food Label
to better understand how to read them. Another book that your library might have is
Bowes & Church's Food Values of Portions Commonly Used
by
Jean AT Pennington Ph.D, Anna De Planter Bowes, and Helen Nichols Church. If your parents are still having trouble, I suggest they visit with your sister's dietitian for more education.
