Question

I was diagnosed with diabetes a few days ago, and I am interested in finding a monitor that supports testing on the arm instead of the finger. Do you have any information to help me pick one?

Answer

"Alternative Site Testing" (AST) is the catch-phrase for meters that are authorized by the FDA to be used at other "sites" besides the fingertips. Remember, alternative site blood sugar results may be different than those obtained by fingertip sticks, if glucose levels are changing rapidly (e.g. after a meal, taking insulin or during or after exercise). There's very little different between the different brands of meters capable of AST. Ask your diabetes educator to show you the different brands, then decide which one you want to use.
