Question
I am 64 years old, retired, and I am currently building a house so I
get plenty of exercise. I weigh the same as I
did when I was in the U.S. Navy. I know I have prediabetes because diabetes runs in my
family, and I also take medication for high blood pressure. So what
do I do about it? I need some guidelines as to diet. What should I
be eating? My doctor was not much help.
Answer
Current intervention programs for people with
pre-diabetes
involve an appointment with a dietitian.
Please ask your
doctor for a referral to a dietitian.who specializes in diabetes. If he/she cannot
provide one for you to see, you can
contact a local hospital and set up an appointment. Alternatively, you can go to the
American Association of Diabetes Educators website
to locate a local dietitian/educator who specializes in diabetes. Use these steps: once in the website, click on "General Public"; then click on "Find an Educator"; fill in your city and state and click on "Search"; an entire list of diabetes educators with their credentials will come up and you can click on a name of an RD/CDE to obtain their address and phone number.
