I wonder if part of your problem is simply lesser levels of activity after your recent illness?
And you should be aware that
type 2 diabetes
is a progressive disorder, and so it's very likely that additional therapy will be needed as the years go by.
In any case,
Prandin
and the
sulfonylureas
(including glyburide) are about the same in what they do (they enhance insulin secretion).
I wouldn't anticipate that being on both of these would do much more than being on large doses of either one (and you're on maximal dose of glyburide).
Metformin,
on the other hand, works differently — as an "insulin sensitizer" — and therefore would work together with either an SU or with Prandin.
So it's likely that part of your recent problem is losing the insulin sensitizer effect of metformin.
Since you're getting nowhere fast, I'd suggest you have a review of your total diabetes program (including meal plan, exercise, medications, and meter), preferably by a diabetes team. If you're doing the best possible on all other aspects of your care, maybe it's time to switch to another diabetes drug
(for example, short-acting insulin at meal time, or perhaps a different combination of pills).
