Question

I am 14 years old, and seven days ago, I got diabetes. Please help me with food because I am new at diabetes. Can you tell me what I should eat for breakfast lunch and dinner? (You could make a list of everything.)

Answer

It is not appropriate for us to prescribe or write out menus, since we do not have essential information, such as your height, weight, blood glucose levels, insulin regimen and daily schedule, including activity. A meal plan (using carbohydrate counting for example) should be planned specifically for you by a Registered Dietitian.

In this day and age, no food is excluded from a meal plan. There should be little difference between a healthy meal plan for a teenaged boy who does not have diabetes and one who does. The key is (as Sue stated) to work with a knowledgable dietititan to find out what will work best for you!

Please have your parents ask your doctor for a referral to a dietitian. If he/she cannot provide one for you to see, your parents can contact a local hospital and set up an appointment. Alternatively, they can call 800-TEAM-UP-4 (sponsored by the American Association of Diabetes Educators) for a list of diabetes dietitians in your area.
