Question

I am taking two 500 mg of Glucophage XR a day and will be slowly increasing to three pills per day. Do you take the pill before you eat, with the food, or after you've eaten? Just wondering when is the best time.

Answer

According to the US product insert (available at the manufacturer's website [PDF file]), Glucophage should be given in divided doses with meals while Glucophage XR should generally be given once daily with the evening meal. The XR form is an extended-release (long-lasting) pill, and the full daily dose can be given all at once, whether you're taking one, two, or more pills as your dose.

ED: Please check with your physician or nurse educator to be certain which form of Glucophage you're using and that you are taking it properly.
