I checked with the manufacturer and learned that the CoaguChek (manufactured by Roche
Diagnostics Point of Care Division) PT (prothrombin time) home
testing device does require two levels of liquid control solution
before each test
is done. Neither a patient nor a health care professional should be performing a test without first using the Level 1 and Level 2 control solutions.
The CoaguChek home testing monitor requires a physician prescription to purchase ($1995.00)
and then a $300.00 training course is required to certify in its use.
It may be covered by Medicare and/or other insurance, if medically indicated.
For more information on the range of both patient and professional products for PT testing, visit
www.coaguchek-usa.com. Other information can be obtained by contacting Roche diagnostics Customer Service @ 800-428-5076 or Technical Assistance (if you already own a monitor) @ 800-428-4674.

Editor's note:
I think this Q&A points out the importance of learning how to correctly use your device — whether it's a blood sugar meter or some other device, such as an
insulin pump, or whatever. If you're not sure, look for an 800-number, and call the manufacturer's Customer Service department!
