Question
I am 43 and was diagnosed with
type 2 diabetes
at age 42. I am taking
metformin
daily. I have been healthy my whole life, with the exception of chronic sleep issues,
including night terrors, dreaming, sleep walking/talking and restless leg syndrome. I
have been taking Mirapex and Clonazapam for about 5 years for my sleep
issues following a sleep study.
Since my diagnosis last year, I have had several other health issues arise. Several months after my diagnosis,
I began vomiting fairly often — following an EGD and
ultrasound, I was recently diagnosed with Barrett's Change and gallstones.
I am now taking Protonix for reflux, but continue to vomit following meals.
I have never suffered from heartburn, my cholesterol, triglycerides and blood pressure have always been well in the
normal range. For the past 10 years, however, I became much less
active due to ACL and chronic knee pain (4 scopes, osteotomy looming), and I did
put on about 25 pounds. Since my diagnosis
with diabetes, I have lost 25
pounds, still need to lose about 20 more. My question is why, all
of a sudden, do I have all of these problems and are they related? What can I do (besides weight loss/exercise) to prevent anything more! Thank you.
Answer
Some of your problems are likely related to the weight gain;
obviously you are dealing with this and have been successful.
Although people with diabetes can have problems emptying their stomach, called gastroparesis,
which leads to recurrent vomiting, it appears this was ruled out
by the studies you had. By taking care of your diabetes you are
certainly decreasing your chance of eye, kidney, heart,
etc. problems in the future. I would continue what
you are doing and work closely with your provider to see if any
other causes of the recurrent vomiting are possible.

There's some chance the
metformin
might be aggrevating your gut problems. Talk to your doctor about perhaps substituting another diabetes medication.
