Question

Does that "stocking glove sensation" of peripheral neuropathy neuropathy get better as blood sugars are brought under control or is nerve damage from peripheral neuropathy permanent? My neurologist informed me that nerves regenerate as the underlying cause is stopped but it does take a long time and nerve fibers are like the branch of a tree. Thanks.

Answer

It is not predictable whether sensation will return after blood sugar levels are under better control. If you are referring to the "tingling" or pain that can be present that usually does improve with time. If you do have decreased sensation in your feet it is very important to examine them daily for any injury or irritated spots and be sure that your toenails are trimmed regularly and if you have callouses they are treated regularly. It is also important to be sure that your shoes are properly fitted. As you know, good sugar control will also decrease your chances of getting complications in your eyes or kidneys.
