Question
My sugar level was measured at 101 and I was told that it is normal. However, knowing that two grandparents
of mine had it I still want to cut down on the consumption of sugar. I exercise
regularly and my weight is 180 pounds for 6'3''. I recently read
an article on detoxification of the body and wanted to do what was recommended:
drink juices only for 2-3 days. I stopped drinking lots of juices because they contain
20-30 g of sugar per glass. Could this raise blood sugar
and make pancreas overwork, especially since I would not eat anything else?
Thank you very much.
Answer
Changing your diet for a few days will not significantly
affect your pancreas and should not raise your sugar. If you drink only
juices you are on essentially a pure carbohydrate diet. Your weight is
excellent for your height so I would continue a balanced diet and regular
exercise. If the sugar of 101
mg/dl [5.6 mmol/L]
was done after fasting it is borderline high by current standards.
The recent change in the standards defines a sugar of 100-125
mg/dl [5.6-6.9 mmol/L]
as
"pre-diabetes".
The next time it is measured it may well be normal. So
just keep up your healthy lifestyle and check the fasting sugar
every year or two and you will be doing everything you can to maintain normal sugar levels.
