Question

I am 4 weeks pregnant and my last HbA1c taken about 5 weeks ago was 6.7. I just submitted a new one but have not gotten the results. About 3 weeks prior to and up to conception my blood sugars were very good. I had had problems with my morning levels, but they had evened out. I finally have the right dose. However, during the first 2 weeks of pregnancy I had a bad cold and had trouble keeping control over my blood sugars with several high results. (Now they are well within 4-8 mmol/L [72-144 mg/dl]). My question is how do high blood sugars in the first 2 weeks of the pregnancy affect the baby? I had my most trouble with my cold in the first week.

Answer

From what you relate you have excellent control of your diabetes and have the best chance of having a normal pregnancy. Although we have no way to know how a few high blood sugars affect the baby, we do know that those women with good A1c prior to and during pregnancy have the best outcomes. Keep up the excellent control and I am confident that you have done all you can to assure a successful pregnancy.
