Question
My husband just about a month ago started having blank outs — he was driving and ran off the road and does not remember a thing. His
doctor has not yet put him on any medication. I have been checking his
blood sugar
three times a day for the last two weeks and his readings goes up to 375 and never as low as 135. Should he be on medication and is it normal for these blank outs?
I am real worried. The doctor seems to think that my husband is on the onset of diabetes,
and has not put him on any medication as of yet, but does have me taking his blood sugar
3 times a day and keeping a record, This is why I am so concerned.
At what point do they decide to start the medication? He is already on a diabetic diet, but still running high blood sugars. He is 72 years old.
I have searched the web for more information on the reactions having to do with
blank outs, not unconscious but being able to remember or control his actions at the time. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.
Answer
The decision to start medication is individual and based on the initial response of the blood sugars to lifestyle (exercise and diet) and the
symptoms that the person is having. If the sugars have not changed after a month or so, or he is having
more symptoms from them, you can discuss starting medication with his doctor.
The spells you describe are not likely related to high sugars and since he is not on medication would not be
related to low blood sugars. These can be further evaluated by your doctor to see if there is some other condition that needs treatment.
