Question
I am 42 years old and was diagnosed with
type 2 diabetes
three weeks ago. I was started on 500 mg of metformin XR
for one week and increased 2000 mg per day after the first week. I met
with the dietitian, have been religiously following the prescribed diet,
and they typically walk about an hour per day. I've been testing my blood
sugar levels several times throughout the day to try to determine any
patterns. So far, the readings are all over the place. Is it too soon to
expect my blood sugar levels to be little more stable or consistent?
Answer
Metformin's effect increases over month or so, and a dose of 1000
mg is still submaximal. Stick with it a while longer then discuss with your
physician about increasing
further (versus adding a second drug such as a sulfonylurea).
