Question

I am 55 years old and have had diabetes for about 15 years. I was on oral medicine, but have just started taking premixed insulin. In addition, I still take Actos and metformin.

I've been on the insulin for three weeks and started to get my period again, and it's been five years since I last had one. Is this normal?

Answer

This bleeding is not normal, and probably has nothing to do with your diabetes. Postmenopausal bleeding needs immediate evaluation for any precancerous condition. In your case, I would strongly recommend that you see your gynecologist for evaluation as soon as possible.
