Question

My 58 year old, obese mother has type 2 diabetes and is now taking insulin in addition to metformin. Recently, she attended the diabetes education course at the local hospital, and it's been very motivated since then. She has been taking her medications and following her meal plan very closely. However, her blood to your levels to not seem to be responding. Her levels, not only run high, but often dropped dangerously low.

I am very concerned about her, and her family practitioner appears not to have any idea as to how to control her blood sugar. Any clues you can give would be greatly appreciated.

Answer

My initial guess is that her insulin program needs revision. She should be evaluated by a diabetes team that includes an endocrinologist, diabetes nurse educator, and diabetes dietitian. She should ask for a referral from her family physician.
