Question
I had a test for what I guess was three month span of blood sugar levels
and my average was 268 mg/dL along with a fasting blood sugar of
353 mg/dL. I've not been following my diet, and I eat anything.
The doctor at the VA had me on 10 mg of glipizide twice per day, and
because of the high numbers, she's putting me on 1000 mg of
metformin once per day. She also told me to
increase this to twice per day for two weeks. Has anyone ever had this
large dosage to start out with? Is it overkill?
Answer
1000 mg of metformin per day is an entirely reasonable dose. The biggest
concern about starting with 1000 mg rather than 500 mg is the fact that the
gut side effects of metformin are somewhat dose-dependent. So, if you get
problems, cut the dose back to 500 mg and notify your physician.
On a somewhat different note, it's impossible for any pills to control your
diabetes if you continue to ignore your meal plan. You should talk with
the diabetes dietitian and sort out what changes you could make to help
control your diabetes.
