Question
I need help for a 51 year old woman with
type 1
diabetes, diagnosed four years ago, along with
hepatitis C. She is taking insulin (12 units in the morning and
six units in the evening), following a strict diet, and she is an active
person. However, she weighs 92 kg (202 pounds), even though she's very
active. She would appreciate getting some advice to lessen her appetite
which seems to be increasing, especially during the evening.
Answer
She should talk to her doctor have up these concerns and asked to be
referred to a Registered Dietitian who can help devise a meal plan that
that might reduce appetite. I have a few general suggestions that could be
discussed with a dietitian and doctor:
-
She can try consuming several small meals throughout the day (instead of
three large meals) to eat in curbing appetite.
-
She should not skip meals as this will increase hunger later in the day.
-
She needs to ask about the types of food she is eating, because certain
foods (such as those with fiber) can help a person feel full longer. She
can ask the dietitian to include foods in the meal plan that help her feel
satisfied longer.
-
She should consider drinking low calorie, sugar free beverages to help curb
appetite. Products such as Crystal light have little effect on blood
sugar, but may help lessen hunger.
