Question
I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes
about 18 months ago, and I am presently controlling it with diet and
exercise, although I am taking a cholesterol lowering agent. Many months
ago, I went to a registered dietitian, but I haven't gone for a while. I
don't feel as though I learned much from her, and I am
unsure as to what I should really get out of my visits. She did answer all
my questions, but I don't feel like I learned very much
unless I asked her something. Am I expecting too much? Should I see a
different registered dietitian or possibly a Certified Diabetes Educator?
Answer
Make sure you see a Registered Dietitian who is also a Certified Diabetes
Educator (RD/CDE). If you cannot locate an RD with
the CDE credential, then at the very least look for an RD who works in a
local diabetes center. Your doctor may be able to provide
a
referral.
People are sensitive about what they eat and having to
talk about this with another person. I think that taking a list of
questions is important. Also bringing your blood glucose logbook and an
honest food diary that can be assessed is extremely helpful for the
RD. The two of you need to work collaboratively. You know yourself and your
capabilities and likes/dislikes better, and likely he/she will know
diabetes better.
