Question

I am 30 years old, have had diabetes for two years, and, I am 10 weeks pregnant.I was on pills before the pregnancy, now take insulin, and my HbA1c is 8%. What are my risk of birth defects?

Answer

Your hemoglobin A1c is above normal which does increase your risk of fetal abnormalities. However, the odds are still well in your favor (90-95%) of having an unaffected baby. Nevertheless, it is important that you continue to improve your glucose control. Also, over the course of the pregnancy you will have several ultrasound examinations of the baby to look for any problems.
