Question
I am an almost 54 year old female who was diagnosed with
type 2 diabetes
last summer, and I have been on
metformin
for about four months. I have not had a period
for over a year, but this morning I started spotting. Could the
metformin be responsible for this? If so, why?
Answer
I am assuming that you have gone through menopause.
I doubt that the metformin caused you to have some bleeding.
There is a very slight chance that you ovulated;
metformin would cause bleeding due to improved ovulation
as seen in women with
PCOS.
However, there are other causes for bleeding at your age that need to be evaluated by an gynecologist, and I would strongly recommend that you make an appointment to see yours.
