Question
I have been having allergic reactions every few months, and each time I was
treated with prednisone. About four months ago, my doctor found that my
blood sugar was very high and put me on
metformin
two weeks ago. I had another reaction and was once again given prednisone.
I had a terrible reaction and was sick for days. Yesterday, I had another
checkup, and my doctor increased my metformin because my sugars had shot
up. How long does the spike in sugar caused by prednisone last?
Answer
It's hard to say since it depends on the dose of steroids that is used.
You don't say how high the blood glucose level went up. If it was quite a
bit, you will need temporary extra medications (most likely insulin) to
cover the effects of the steroid therapy. If your physician is unsure how
to proceed, ask for
a
referral
to a diabetes specialist.
