Question

My mom was just diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, and her doctor recommended Byetta. However, she has Crohn's disease. She had surgery 40 years ago which remedied the major concerns, and she is not currently being treated. She only sees flair-ups when she is under stress. Are there any contraindications for using Byetta with her history of Crohn's disease?

Answer

The Byetta label states:
BYETTA has not been studied in patients with severe gastrointestinal disease, including gastroparesis Its use is commonly associated with gastrointestinal adverse effects, including nausea, vomiting, anddiarrhea. Therefore, the use of BYETTA is not recommended in patients with severe gastrointestinal disease.
I think that this would have to be a question for her physicians to answer.
