Question

A researcher on the West Coast told me he thought I had "type 1.5" because I am only slightly overweight, but my sugar numbers can be high. He mentioned a C-peptide test, but my endocrinologist said it shouldn't be an issue.

I find it hard to believe that I have such bad metabolic syndrome, but I am only 20 pounds overweight and exercise. I am surgically postmenopausal, and my sugars got much worse after surgery. Mother had diabetes and a big waist; maternal grandmother was huge and died of falling down the stairs and somehow causing "an upside down stomach." So, it's probably in the genes. What is type 1.5?

Answer

Type 1.5 diabetes is commonly called LADA (Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adults). The link will provide the information you requested. If you think you fit the profile, you should discuss this more with your endocrinologist.
