Question
My 13 year old son has recently been diagnosed with
type 1
diabetes,
and one of the consequences seems to be an upset digestion. While, like most boys, he has always been prone to the
odd fart (apologies for graphic detail) he is now burping and farting all the time
and is becoming extremely self-conscious. The dietitian doesn't seem to think
it is anything to do with his diabetes but, as it is rather like having body odor,
and he has been sent out of class once because of it. I am keen to see if we can do anything
about it. I could weep really; it's such a banal problem to
encounter with such a life-changing chronic disease. I would be grateful for any tips!
Answer
I agree that this probably has nothing to do with his diagnosis per se. Perhaps his new style of
eating has brought it about, but that's pure speculation.
There are several over-the-counter anti-gas products available at any pharmacy. Check with the pharmacist or your
son's physician to see if one of them might be helpful.
It's certainly worth a try.
