Question

After testing my insulin level, my doctor told me I was using too much insulin. He prescribed metformin and told me it will decrease my chances of getting diabetes. Is this true?

Answer

Your doctor is correct: Metformin (brand name Glucophage) is sometimes used in the treatment of pre-diabetes, and seems to work to delay the onset of diabetes. See a discussion of a research trial called the diabetes prevention program (also known by its initials, the DPP) for more informaiton.
