Question

My mother has type 2 diabetes along with high blood pressure and is being treated with Tenormin. Is this safe?

Answer

Use of medications for hypertension is strongly recommended for people with both hypertension and diabetes, as both conditions are risk factors for heart attack and stroke. See high blood pressure for more information.

There has been some concern that beta-blockers (such as Tenormin) might interfere with the ability to sense hypoglycemic symptoms. Your mom's physician should discuss this with her. There are alternate medications that can be tried if this is an issue for her.
